Why your home doesn’t feel like you? (and how to fix that)

Welcome back to the blogposts, it has been a while but what better time to come back than January 2026!! If you’ve ever looked around your home and thought, “It looks good… but it doesn’t feel good,” you’re not alone. Many interiors today are beautifully curated yet strangely don’t reflect the people who live in those homes.

1.Scroll for Intent

One of the biggest mistakes I see is treating online inspiration as a shopping list rather than a research tool. When we save images without questioning why, we end up recreating someone else’s home instead of designing our own.

Instead, I encourage you to use platforms like Pinterest intentionally (I talk you through how to do this in the video below). Review what you’ve saved and shortlist five to ten images that truly stand out. Then ask yourself what they have in common. Is it the materiality, the colour palette, the furniture, or the way the space is styled? This exercise will help in creating a more personalised space.

2.Be Selective With Trends

It’s the start of the year so one thing that you will be seeing are trend reports. Trends can be inspiring, but designing your home around them can be costly and short-lived. I always advise on investing in timeless pieces and if you enjoy trends, introducing them through styling rather than large items of furniture means you are sustainable and investing in pieces you really like.

3.What brings you joy?

A well-designed home is defined less by how it looks and more by how it feels. Before choosing furniture or finishes, consider the mood you want your space to evoke. Think about the colours you’re drawn to, your favourite places, the people you love being around or even details from childhood that made you feel safe or inspired. These references are powerful design tools and help create spaces that feel layered and lived-in.

Creating a Home That Reflects You

If there was ever a message I preached it would be spend more time with yourself to understand yourself better. When you understand what you’re drawn to and why, your home naturally becomes a reflection of your values, your rhythms, and your story.

My hope this year is that we move away from spaces designed purely for social media and toward interiors that feel meaningful, enduring, and deeply personal.

If you’re feeling stuck or unsure where to begin, we offer a design advice to help you clarify your vision and create a home that truly reflects who you are.
